The headline and main image of the New York Times sculpture changes to reflect both the daily news as well as demonstrate how the news affected me personally.
The four New York Times headlines featured are:
1. "FOR THE DEAF, SOCIAL DISTANCING CAN MEAN SOCIAL ISOLATION" contrasts with "PANDEMIC CREATES CHALLENGES FOR DEAF STUDENT". As a student with hearing loss, completing my senior year through distance learning is proving challenging. The combination of students and teachers in face masks in in-person learning combined with students like myself on Zoom, leads to muffled voices and makes lip reading difficult.
2. "ARE WE LOSING A GENERATION OF CHILDREN TO REMOTE LEARNING?" contrasts with "MANY STUDENTS THRIVE IN REMOTE LEARNING." The image depicts a student on the couch with her laptop, surrounded by her cats while she attends remote learning classes. By viewing the image illustrating the difference between in person and distance learning, one clearly sees the comfort the individual enjoys while learning at home.
3. "MORE ADULTS THAN EVER LIVE WITH PARENTS OR GRANDPARENTS" contrasts with "PANDEMIC BRINGS MY FAMILY CLOSER." The image depicts three generations of women outside enjoying each others company. I usually live in New York City with my parents; however, my family and I moved to Florida during the pandemic to be closer to my grandmother. The silver lining in this pandemic is having this time to get to to know her better than ever before.
4. "JOB LOSSES SOAR; U.S. VIRUS CASES TOP WORLD" contrasts with "QUARANTINED INSIDE FOR RECORD 120 DAYS." The image depicts a teen who has been stuck inside her home for 120 days straight. She is shown wearing her senior year sweatshirt and her PPE mask inside her home. For the first four months of the Pandemic I did not leave my New York City apartment. Eventually I ventured outside for short, safe walks, however, I have not been able to interact with another teen in person for the past eight months. I am incredibly grateful to have the support of my family and a strong community of friends online.
